What are the main cuts when selecting
a diamond wedding or engagement ring?
Your diamond wedding or engagement
ring will emit a certain brilliance or dullness. These
effects are commonly achieved by the type of cut performed
on the diamond.
Brilliant Cut Diamonds
The brilliant cut (also known as
a hybrid cut) is defined by small triangular faces that
extend from the middle of the diamond (the girdle),
to the top of the diamond (the table). As the name suggests,
the brilliant cut provides a stunning and sharp reflection
of light, giving it great appeal with engagement and
wedding rings.
Step Cut Diamonds
The step cut (also commonly referred
to as the Emerald Cut) is generally defined by it's
step like characteristics. The diamond is shaped with
steps leading from the base to the top. This style of
cut is generally more drab and subtle wit the way it
reflects light.
Diamond Cut Shapes
Whilst there are predominantly 2
types of diamond cuts (as mentioned above), it is more
likely that you will have a diamond cut into a particular
shape. The available shapes that you will most commonly
find are listed in the table below.
Note that diamonds in cut using the
'brilliant cut' are around 10% more expensive than diamonds
cut using a 'step cut'.
