Planning Your Reception
The modern western wedding is an average
of about 5 hours in duration, giving newlyweds plenty
of time to mingle and exchange cheer with honoured guests,
family and friends.
Your wedding guests need to be given
careful consideration, with regards to seating positions,
table placement, and access to various amenities and formalities.
Guest Table Layout
There are a range of guest types at
most weddings, from young children, parents and close
family, old school friends, close work associates, through
to elderly and disabled guests.
Not only do you need to think about
who will sit at each table, but also how those tables
should be positioned.
For example, we do not advise that
you seat your elderly guests near the band or dj speakers,
conversely you may want your elderly guests to have a
clear audible view for your wedding speeches.
Your disabled guests need to have clear
access to amenities, and need to be positioned to view
the key formalities such as 'the cutting of the cake ceremony'
and the 'bouquet toss'.
Guests with Other Guests
The most common reception table configurations
offer seating positions for either 6, 8 or 10 guests.
You will initially want to group guests according to their
genre, for example family with family, school friends
with school friends and so on.
However, you may find that there is
an overflow of guests from one table that need to be mixed
with guests from another table. This is where you need
to be both considerate and diplomatic.
You may decide to create a table for
your younger teenage guests, or a table for children,
which can be strategically placed at the rear of the other
tables.
Other issues such as inter-family rivalry,
feuding, and issues amongst old friends will be a deciding
factor in determing both guest table seating and table
placement.
